POMPEII THRENODY by Cerith Wyn Evans
Curated by Andrea Viliani

📅 July 19, 2025 – January 11, 2026 (Preview July 18, 2025 at 9:00 PM)

📍Antiquarium of Boscoreale

Like a visceral and profound funeral song, an ancient Greek threnody, where alternating choirs and solo voices accompanied the deceased in their final farewell, the solo exhibition Pompeii Threnody by Cerith Wyn Evans (1958, Llanelli, Wales-UK) – opening Friday, July 18 at the Antiquarium of Boscoreale – leads visitors into an unconscious and involuntary dialogue “with those and that which, fundamentally, continues to live in Pompeii“, evoking the enduring vitality of memory.

Pompeii Threnody is the first site-specific exhibition of the Pompeii Commitment. Archaeological

materials program specifically designed for the Antiquarium of Boscoreale and Villa Regina, offering a new interpretation of these places through contemporary language.

The exhibition, curated by Andrea Viliani with Stella Bottai, Laura Mariano, Caterina Avataneo, will be open to the public from Saturday, July 19, 2025, to Sunday, January 11, 2026.

Pompeii Threnody explores memory, time, and transformation, central elements in the work of the Welsh artist, one of the most refined and poetic figures in the international scene.

Twelve works are on display, ten of which were specifically created for this occasion, in an evocative dialogue between archaeological material and contemporary imagination. Among these:

A series of photogravures dedicated to the cypress trees of the Sarno plain, which evoke the geological and memorial dimension of the Vesuvian landscape;

A light installation inspired by the ceremonial chariot found in Civita Giuliana, featuring the famous Latin palindrome IN GIRUM IMUS NOCTE ET CONSUMIMUR IGNI, “We go round in the night and are consumed by fire”

• A group of lamp-sculptures in the form of golden palms, placed in the Antiquarium’s patio, in dialogue with the architecture of the nearby Villa Regina.

Two of the works (the photogravures and the light installation) will be acquired into the permanent collection of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, enriching the path of interaction between archaeology and contemporary art.
